grounded.
For me, engaging with bamboo and learning about its lifespan in Bali was an experience that left me extremely connected to the material and wanting to honor its natural state. The workshop taught me how to study material. This is a skill I will carry with me as a designer.
When it came to designing a product I wanted it to use bamboo in the least invasive way possible. My design leverages the natural form of bamboo, not hiding its qualities or manipulating it to be something else. My floor chairs were inspired by the work we did sitting on the ground while in Bali. Leveraging the ground as a working and eating space was a concept I thought would translate well to NYC apartments which are usually very small. The floor chairs use the body's weight to distribute force and maintain sturdiness. They are also stackable for easy storage and even turn into tables, shelves or just beautiful sculptures to enjoy while they are not being used.
